A talk with Heritage Times Founder Md Umar Ashraf on the history of Jama Masjid. Jama Masjid is an iconic mosque situated in the heart of Delhi also known as Purani Dilli. This Purana Dilli is a walled city that was constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The Jama Masjid is a historic mosque that has witnessed many important events in Indian history. This used to be the center of revolutionary activities during the 1857 war of Independence. Later on in 1920 when Khilafat Movement and Non-Cooperation movement joined hands to fight colonial rule again this iconic mosque became a prominent center for revolutionaries. This Mosque also served as a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity as Hindu religious leaders used to come to Jama Masjid to express solidarity against the struggle with colonial rule.
